Chapter 4 introduces my favorite character of this book, Jim Casy, the recovering preacher; he talks about how he believes the human spirit to be the real Holy Spirit (of the Holy Trinity) and how he really wasn't much of a preacher to begin with, considering how he tended to sleep with the girls of the church afterwards.
On a side note, Jim Casy shares initials with someone that a preacher (even an ex-preacher) should have some knowledge in, Jesus Christ. Considering this is Steinbeck, it's pretty safe to assume this isn't a coincidence, Jim Casy's lack of celibacy and alcohol-loving nonwithstanding.
